Gambier Community Centre

COVID-19

There are no longer capacity limits for indoor or outdoor activities at the community centre with respect to COVID-19. Masks are recommended but not required. We encourage everyone to respect individual choices with respect to wearing masks.

There are also no restrictions re using the gym. Please log in and out on the provided sheet and remember this is a co-op gym which means users are responsible for keeping it tidy. It will be cleaned by our cleaners periodically; please report any problems with the equipment to gccs@gambierisland.org.

About the Community Centre

The Gambier Community Centre is the only public building on Gambier Island. It is managed by a volunteer board of seven currently. The building houses a 50 x 30 foot main hall, updated kitchen with a commercial dishwasher and cooler, updated lounge with wood burning fireplace, a 34 x 15 room on the ground floor honoring the Anavets and a gym. The gym contains a treadmill, bike, universal gym and an elliptical trainer. Gym membership is $50 for 12 months and requires a community centre membership. The Centre is privately owned by the Gambier Community Centre Society (GCCS), a registered Canadian charity. GCCS acknowledges that we are on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Squamish Nation, Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw.

Membership and Donations

Remember Commotion ON the Ocean, pedicures and yoga with Barb Crompton and Kate Potter? These events are all planned and organized by volunteers within our community. But, insurance, utilities, the water system, lawn maintenance and cleaning require money. A Single or Family Membership of $25/$40, respectively, will go a long way to help raise the $10,000 --$18,000 we need each year. Membership runs from January-December.

Willing and able to offer a bit more support? We will provide a tax receipt for any donation $25 or more. Tangible donations in-kind are also eligible - perhaps a commercial range for the new kitchen! You can also designate GCCS as a “directed gift” when you give with the United Way at work. Our registration number is 133062158 RR0001.

If a cheque is your best option, please make it payable to GCCS and mail it to: GCCS, 721 Andy’s Bay Road, Gambier Island, BC V0N 1V0.

History

It is not a stretch to say that the current Hall grew out of the ashes of the Anavet Hall located in Gambier Harbour which burned down on Easter Sunday 1987. After the first Hall burned down, there was talk about rebuilding it on the old site but it never happened - it was rumored that it may have been built on a road allowance! Instead, with 3.2 acres donated by Helen Negroponte, insurance money from the Anavets Hall, many donations from the community, grants from Go-BC, money from the Seniors Group for kitchen equipment and loads of volunteer work, the hall was built and dedicated on May 22, 1994. The large deck was added in 2005 with support from the SCRD. An Anavet memorial has been built in Gambier Harbour.
