Gambier Island Community Centre Hall

Gambier Community Centre

The Gambier Community Centre also known as 'The Hall' is the hub of the community's activities - from yoga, art and T'ai Chi classes to annual events like the Spring Dance, Commotion by the Ocean, Family Fair, Children's Christmas party and Christmas Caroling. It is also available for private party rental.

The building houses a large banquet room, lounge, fully-equipped kitchen, fitness centre and various storage rooms as well as a deck and covered barbeque pit, baseball diamond, children's play area and a large grassy games field.

The Fitness Centre houses a tread mill, 2 stationary bikes, a rowing machine and an universal gym. Annual membership (January-June) is $50 (Centre membership is also required). Email the webmaster to join.

Relying heavily on Centre members and other volunteers, the facility is managed by the directors of the Gambier Community Centre Society. The current directors are Barbara Miklashek, Treasurer, Carmela Allevato, Secretary, Nancy Grenier, Haley Benson, Scott Hanna, Camilla Berry and Ashaya Mukuyama. The directors plan and coordinate events and manage the maintenance of the building and grounds. The average operating costs over the past five years were $14,557. Revenues include membership (currently about 100 members), rentals, event proceeds and donations. See 2008-2009 Financial Comparison for more details.

Membership: Membership for 2010/11 (June-June) is $35 per immediate family or $25 for an individual. In addition to supporting the centre, members receive a break on hall rentals and some event discounts.

History: It is not a stretch to say that the current Hall grew out of the ashes of the Anavet Hall located in Gambier Harbour which burned down on Easter Sunday 1987. After the first Hall burned down, there was talk about rebuilding it on the old site but it never happened - it was rumored that it may have been built on a road allowance! Instead, with 3.2 acres donated by Helen Negroponte, a large donation
from the Anavets, grants from Go-BC, money from the
Seniors Group for kitchen equipment and loads of volunteer work, the hall was built and dedicated on May 22, 1994. The large deck was added in 2005 with support from the SCRD. An Anavet memorial has been built in Gambier Harbour.
